For over ten years, Ed & Helen Maurer have organized and led unique hiking adventures along Europe’s long distance trails. Now we make these trips available to a wider public, and we add more destinations. While the hikes in Europe are exclusively operated by Sunrise Travel, those to other destinations are organized by reliable foreign tour companies. Regardless of the destination, these small hiking and trekking group adventures are led by certified leaders known to and vetted by us.Following the Camino in France
September 7 - 28, 2021: $3,995*
Due to the popularity of this unique long-distance hiking experience, we are repeating the pilgrimage along the Via Podiensis. Anybody thinking of walking to Santiago de Compostela ought to consider starting the journey in Le Puy. The first written account of the walk from Le Puy en Velay to Santiago is from the 10th century, more than a thousand years ago!
We invite you to walk with us along the first part of this historic route through some of France's most remote and picturesque regions, where hidden architectural, historical and culinary treasures abound. The trail leads steadily southwest and generally from higher to lower elevations, and from springtime on the high plains into summer in the verdant valleys of the Midi. On a typical day, we hit the trail right after breakfast, stop for lunch, and continue walking in the afternoon—all along taking pictures, meeting other walkers, and visiting sites of cultural, historic or touristic importance. Most nights we stay at small hotels and guesthouses in rooms with private bathrooms, although there are a few occasions where our accommodations will be more basic, i.e. with facilities down the hall. Hike along the Libyan Sea in Crete
May 15 - 26, 2022: $2,850
A few years ago, we fell in love with Crete, especially its wild western part. Steep cliffs rise above lonely beaches with crystal clear water, whitewashed churches and small villages dot the arid hillsides where the scent of pungent plants perfumes the air. This trip offers a chance to spend time in historic Chania, visit the Minoan Palace in Heraklion where the Minotaur once roamed, and, best of all, hike part of the E4 long distance trail along Europe’s southernmost coast facing the Libyan Sea. This is not for the faint of heart as some of the hikes are on exposed, steep trails, and we would rate some of the hiking as strenous. Leaders: Ed & Helen Maurer

Immerse yourself in French culture and join us on a hike across the vineyards of Burgundy and Champagne. You don’t have to be a wine and/or fine food expert to enjoy this trip, but it helps if you enjoy the pleasures of the palate and the and the products of nature. We’ll see some of France’s prettiest villages and vineyards as we make our way from the hills of Burgundy toward the wide expanse of the Champagne. While the verticals are minor, we’ll still walk about 8 miles a day which leaves plenty of time to appreciate the regions’ cultural and culinary riches. i.e.: this trip is good for body and soul.
